RV Solar Panels

Videos about RV Solar Panels

Here's a very brief video on RV solar panels tracking systems. It's an interesting concept, but tracking systems have largely gone out of favor in the solar industry because the price of modules has dropped so much over the past several years. It's generally cheaper to add panels rather than buy a tracking system. However, it could make sense on an RV because of the very limited roof space.

Now this is very interesting. Lightweight solar panels without the normal installation issues is a real breakthrough if they really have it figured out. But here's what I'm wondering about. Solar cells are quite rigid and break incredibly easy. Even micro fractures in a cell are extremely detrimental to performance. It's great that the module is flexible, but how do the cells stand up when the substraight is flexed or bent?  Amorphous silicon technology is flexible, but panel output is far less than what you get out of the regular solar modules that have a number of crystalline silicon cells wired together. With roof space at a premium on an RV, traditional panels make a lot more sense.

Blog Articles about RV Solar Panels

Here's a nice blog discussion on DIY solar panel installation on an RV. It sounds like a couple of the contributors bought RV solar kits and it seems to have worked out very well for them. That's one way to be certain that you'll end up with a balanced system.

Installing Solar Panels on an RV - Good Old RVs

Good Old RVs sent out a general email requesting blogs and posts about adding/installing solar energy to your RV. I have no experience but I want to know too.…

RV Solar Panels

Here's an article about an RV dealer that went "Green" by putting a very large solar installation on their roof. They are going to recieve the financial benefit of this photovoltaic system for decades to come. Now that solar panels have become so cheap, solar is a great investment in most instances.

Stoltzfus RV Goes Green, Installs Solar Panels | RV Business

http://www.rvbusiness.com10/26/12

Stoltzfus RV & Marine recently partnered with Advanced Solar Industries, installing 923 solar panels to generate clean, sustainable energy at the West.

EXCERPT: “I was always a believer in solar power, and am very excited to share our experience with our customers,” said Bob Cox, general manager at Stoltzfus RV & Marine. “We hope that our initiative to use green power makes our motorhomes and boats even more attractive.”

There are really just a few considerations if you are trying to figure out which are the best RV solar panels. First, you are going to be way better off going with a brand name. That being said, some solar panel manufacturers are huge companies (NASDAQ and NYSE listed) that you've never heard of. So, you are probably going to want to do a little homework if the module maker is not a name you are familiar with. Price is the second major consideration. In the RV market in particular, prices vary wildly. Quite simply, many companies take advantage of the fact that most buyers are totally unfamiliar with solar pricing. The other thing you will want to look at are the warranties. Most solar modules have lengthy warranties. The should be warrantied for at least 25 years. Also, make sure there in nothing in the warranty that would preclude you from using them on an RV.

On this blog a woman shows us the RV solar system she has on the roof of her RV and she shows how it is wired into her class A motorhome. When you watch the video, please note hoe there is a very large shadow covering parts of two of the panels. That much shading would normally shut down the production in those panels and maybe even the entire system. However, look at the three smaller solar panels and compare those to the single panel sitting all on its own. The single panel is the usual solar panel that is made up with a number of crystalline solar cells. This type of panel does poorly in shade conditions because all the cells are wired in series. The other three solar modules use amorphous silicon technology. These types of panels will lose some of there production when shaded, but the area that is unshaded will keep producing elecricity. Amorphous silicon is less efficient than crystalline technology, but it does better in the shade.

As this gentleman learns from one of his peers, a solar module will generate electricity even when exposed to a very small amount of sunlight. In a highly monitored situation, a solar module was actually shown to be producing a minute amount of power from moonlight.

How you attach solar panels to the roof of your motorhome or travel trailer is a critical issue. After all, at some point you are going to be down the highway at seventy miles per hour and you certainly wouldn't want a solar module to come flying off. The results could be tragic. On this blog we have someone seeking advice from people who have gone through the process already.

If by now you don't know the story of SolarCity, Lyndon and Peter Rive, and their cousin Elon Musk, then you will want to read this article. Of course, Elon Musk is famous for starting PayPal, SpaceX, and perhaps most notably, Tesla Motors. Some of you may not know that Elon provided the initial funding for SolarCity and sits as the Chairman of the board for SolarCity. SolarCity is now the largest solar installation company in North America. Their business model is what made it possible for them to grow so large so quickly. While a lot of homeowners wanted to "go solar", the initial cost stopped all but the few who really wanted it and could afford it. SolarCity created a lease program that allowed a homeowner to have a solar system installed on their home with little or no money out of pocket. All they were required to do was to make a monthly payment that was usually a little less than what they were already paying their utility company for electricity every month. Despite the naysayers who said this wouldn't work, their SolarLease program has become THE way to finance solar in the residential market. The lease is a viable option in states where electricity is relatively expensive and the state or utility companies have grants or programs that defer part of the cost. Unfortunately, there are many utility companies that do not want their customers to put solar panels on their roofs. They want these customers to continue to buy their electricity and they put up roadblocks to try and prevent people from installing solar panels.

Benefits of RV Solar Panels in Reno. Read more at http://t.co/on2wvrgph0

If you are the sort of person who learns well by reading, this is a fabulous book on how to go about intalling RV on your RV. It provides an incredibly thourough and step by step walk through on planning and executing and installing RV solar panels. If you are only get one book on the subject, this should be the one.

The Complete Guide to RV Electrical, Computer, Solar and Communications Systems Working and Living Independently on the Road

The main purpose of this book is to act as a how-to reference manual for outfitting your RV or mobile home with the tools to support your working and life style and is written from the perspective of traveling full-time on the road. A secondary purpose is to supply information for persons to boondock where they wish and still have the electrical conveniences without having shore power. You will find topics on electrical systems, computers, solar energy and communications. Most all of the components referred to in the book are easily found at any computer retail store, hardware store and of course, on-line. You can save hundreds of dollars by installing your RV systems and have the pleasure and satisfaction of doing it yourself. The examples illustrated are a starting point to give you ideas on how to make changes to your RV. You will find detailed pictures, schematics and illustrations throughout the book to guide you along the way. There is also a reference section for finding the components you need and to further explore a topic. Included is a glossary of technical definitions for terms and abbreviations. For the more technically inclined, there are sections interspersed all throughout the chapters that provide ancillary information on the topic being discussed. Go to these Sidebars to learn more about the technology or feature. For those that work on the road, replicating your home or work office into a mobile office in the past has been difficult and frustrating to achieve because you could not accomplish all the same features and functions that are required to perform your job. As time has progressed, technology and people's inventiveness have continued to progress and seems to be progressing in an increasing geometric fashion. Obviously, this is good news for the mobile worker or mobile entrepreneur. Today, as of the writing of this book, the technology is available to match the performance and functionally of a brick and mortar establishment.
